19th C. Pair of Hand Painted Old Paris Vases

A lovely pair of Neo-Greco Paris Porcelain vases of the Second Empire period, hand painted with medallion portraits framed in gilt over an unusual peach colored ground. The vases are lined in black, a bold and elegant contrast with the lighter colors.

Old Paris Porcelain, Paris Porcelain, or Vieux Paris refers to hard-paste porcelain made in and around Paris from 1770 to 1870. The porcelain was produced by as many as 37 different manufacturers, Jacob Petit, Dagoty and Honore, and Darte Freres were a few of the better known. There existed vigorous competition between the factories to produce pieces of artistic merit and extravagant decoration, thus the output was varied and profuse. While the Sevres factory had the patronage of the King, many other royal patrons frequented the workshops of the Paris makers who quickly adapted their wares to the changing fashions. Old Paris became highly collectible in the United States and many pieces found their way into 19th century American homes, especially in the South. Most of the production of Old Paris Porcelain came to a decline with the collapse of the Second Empire in 1870, but the beauty and aesthetic merit of this porcelain has made it a favorite of collectors the world over.

The vases are in excellent condition with little to no gilt or paint wear.
