English Miniature Watercolor Portrait On Card of Mrs. Ball, D. 1829
An endearing English miniature watercolor portrait painted on card of Mrs. Ball, of Sherborn, who died in 1829. The portrait shows a middle-aged lady with her mop cap and ruff worn over a blue high-waisted day gown. She holds an open book in her hands, a symbol of an educated woman of high standing. Her bonnie blue eyes and corkscrew curls reflect her youthful spirit, and there is the hint of a smile slightly discernible behind her serious countenance.
The portrait is very well painted with fine detail and a warm background that appears to be lit in certain areas, the artist was very skilled. It is set into a molded gilt frame with suspension ring with a slightly worn finish, probably original. The portrait is in excellent condition with a provenance listed on the reverse.
