Late 19th Century French Empire Revival Semainier or Tall Chest of Drawers
French Empire is a reflection of the neoclassical style made popular by the Emperor Napoleon and his fashionable wife Josephine. The Emperor had a keen interest in ancient history and excavated some of the Herculean and Egyptian ruins. French fashion dictated an obsession with the ancient styles and the furniture guilds adapted with enthusiasm. The rococo lines of the past were thrown out in favor of more linear construction. They still enhanced most pieces in bronze, often in rich contrast to the dark mahogany woods that were favored, however, the mounts tended to lean towards Egyptian themed artifacts.
The chest is in good condition with use related restoration to the top and a fine crazing to the finish, which is original. The drawers have locks, but (as of now) we haven't a key.
Size: 56 ½” Height by 37” Width by 19” Depth.
