Carved Giltwood Louis XVI Canape a Confidents or Sofa
The construction of fine pieces such as this canapé were usually the work of several people from the designer who drew the piece, to the menuisier who assembled the frame, to the woodcarver who added the embellishments, to the guilder who added the finish, to the upholster who added the fabric, which was often the last step to completion. In 18th and 19th century France, each artist belonged to a guild that was strictly regulated, so that pieces were often the combined effort of several people. This is assuredly a Paris piece because of its gilded finish and intricately carved frame.
The canapé has been reupholstered in a beautiful neutral silk blend Scalamandré damask that fits in with any décor and looks fantastic with the warm slightly age-worn gold of the gilded frame. Our upholsterer encountered a frame that had been recovered several times, he tightened both the frame and the more recent springs that were probably added in the 19th century. The frame is in very good structural condition with restoration to one split near a top wing and minor restoration to the carving and gilded surface. The canapé is in excellent original condition other than the aforementioned restorations. It is a true masterpiece and a fine example of the unsurpassed elegance of French antique furniture.
