Presented for sale is a 19th century oil painting on canvas of a country road landscape painted by Frank Henry Shapleigh and titled, in verso, "Old Road in Jackson, N. H." dated 1881.
Frank H. Shapleigh was born in Boston in 1842 and died in Jackson, N. H., in 1906. He is one of the most collected and beloved of painters from the esteemed group known as New Hamshire's "White Mountain Artists." His paintings are represented in many important museum and private art collections. Shapleigh often inscribed the back of his paintings with a title, date, and location. He painted until ill health forced him to retire in 1898. He was well-traveled and quite prolific as he painted in Europe, California, and Florida, however, his best work was done close to his beloved New Hampshire home, Maple Knoll. The artist was a distinguished Civil War veteran and is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston next to his wife Mary (Studley).
The painting is signed by the artist on verso and in the lower right hand corner. Also included is an original partial copy of his obituary enclosed in a plastic pouch and affixed to the back of the painting. The painting is in good condition with five small patch restorations to the back canvas and scattered in-painting to the front. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is mounted in its original frame.
