Early 19th C. French Miniature Portrait on Ivory of Louise Marie Adelaide de Bourbon

An early 19th century French miniature watercolor portrait on ivory, nicely executed, detailed and signed by the artist P. Renaud. The subject of the portrait is Louise Marie Adelaide de Bourbon, Duchess of Orleans, 1753-1821, a woman much celebrated for her serene beauty and the mother of France’s last King, Louis-Phillippe. Prior to the French revolution, she was also the wealthiest heiress in France.

Her likeness was captured by many artists, but perhaps the most famous and important collaboration was between the Duchess and Vigee-Le Brun, the favorite portrait painter of the doomed Marie Antoinette. The Duchess was one of her first and most ardent clients.

This portrait depicts her as a young beautiful woman dressed informally in a Mop cap with shawl neckline. Her hair is swept back in curls that cascade down her back and her beautiful profile is in luminous contrast to the dark background. We have dated the portrait to the early 19th century; especially note the long "S" on the label, a stylized version of that handwritten letter that fell out of fashion in the early part of the 1800's.

The portrait is set into a oval brass frame with suspension ring and easel. It is in excellent condition, however, it does not fit perfectly into the frame, there is a slight overlap at the top.

Size: 3 7/8” Height x 3 ¼” Width.
