Offered for sale an exceptional American Empire mid to late 19th century drop leaf mahogany Breakfast or Center Table in the Dutch Marquetry style with an exuberant floral inlaid top surmounting a heavy vasiform pedestal atop a platform supported on scrolled legs. The table is fitted with narrow drop leaves on each end that are hinged open and supported by two butterfly brackets.
The style and type of marquetry is typical of the work done by R. J. Horner to whom this table is attributed. Horner copied the work of the Dutch marquetry masters and incorporated this form of inlay into some of his pieces. The richness and detail of the inlay is certainly of the quality of Horner's pieces.
The table is in excellent structural age related condition with some surface craquelure and loss present to the varnish and inlays, however, we certainly don't want to distract from the antique patina by refinishing, so it has been left as is to showcase its evident age. There is also minor restored fracturing to the crotch mahogany veneers on the base and around the edge of the top typical of pieces of this age and era.
Size: 29" Height x 36" Width x 50" Length (leaves down); 74" Length (leaves extended).
