Pair of Italian 19th C. Viero Majolica Roosters
A beautiful pair of matched 19th century Italian majolica Roosters made and signed by Giuseppe Battista Viero. The majestic birds are hand painted in warm earthy glazes and stand on a pedestal adorned with grape vines. Both are in excellent condition with minor age related crazing to the glaze in a few spots.
Giovanni Battista Viero purchased the old Moretti workshop around 1761 in Nove, Italy. His grandsons, Giuseppe and Giovanni took over the business in 1868 where Giuseppe’s work earned prestigious awards at expositions and fairs. Although Giuseppe Viero died in 1897, the workshop remained opened until 1916 where several talented artists carried on his work.
