George III Mahogany Wing Chair

A handsome 19th century George III style Wing Chair with mahogany frame and H-crossed stretchers. The chair is covered in a forest green mohair fabric that is in excellent condition.

Wing chairs had their beginning in England during the 17th century where they were often referred to as Grandfather chairs or Easie (Easy) Chairs. The wings developed to protect against the drafty houses of the period. These comfortable pieces were often found near the fireplace or in a bedroom as a place of respite for the infirm. The type of material used in the covering often bespoke of the wealth of the household. The wing chair, as we know it today, has never lost favor or gone out of style and has changed little over the years. Often, the shape of the wings and cushion, the roll of the arms, and the type of wood used in the frame will tell you when and where it was made. It is not unusual to find just the frames for sale, a sure way to date the piece, since the coverings are usually not period.

This delightful rather petite chair has a mild shaped crest, deep arched wings, and rolled arms. The loose seat cushion is straight, and there are stretchers on the base. It is in very good condition and would be a lovely and comfortable addition to any room.

Size 42" H x 30" W x 29" D.
