Presented for sale is a dreamy river landscape, oil on board, by Frederick Oakes Sylvester, (1869-1915.) The painting depicts the Mississippi river meandering through an uneven shoreline with bluffs and trees, the darkening sky throws an overcast shadow to the background.
Frederick Oakes Sylvester was a deeply religious man and a teacher who developed a lasting reverence for the Mississippi River, its many towns, and its country landscapes. He was born in Massachusetts but relocated to St. Louis, Missouri where he taught school and later became a principle. He developed an abiding love of the Mississippi, and it became the artist's nearly exclusive subject. There have been several important exhibitions of his work and a permanent collection which can be found at the St. Louis Art Museum.
The painting is in good condition with two small scratches to the 3:00 position on the canvas. It is signed in the lower left hand corner and inscribed on verso.
