Presented for sale is a magnificent late 18th century hand carved Venetian console of serpentine shape polychromed with a blanc de plomb finish, the carving highlighted in a soft celadon/aqua finish.
The front and side frieze features lattice pierced carved panels flanking an acanthus-framed cartouche festooned with draped floral garlands. Two heavily carved cabriole legs support the top and are connected at the base with a molded stretcher centered with an asymmetrical carved floral bouquet. The base supports a white marble top and must be mounted to a wall for support.
Noteworthy is the fact that this piece is carved from several pieces of mortise and tenon joined wood. Thus, the carving is not applied, as in later less important pieces, but carved from a piece of solid wood. The carving on this console is very deep, very detailed and crisp. The pierced lattice panels are simply amazing. This type of work takes the skill and precision of a master carver, who in the 18th century, could only have chiseled this piece entirely by hand.
The console is in excellent condition with minor restoration, originally of gilded wood, the piece was polychromed by a superb artisan sometime later in the 19th century.
