Pair of Hand Carved Marble Canova Style Recumbent Lions

Presenting for sale a monumental matching pair of hand carved white veined estate Carrara Marble Lions after Antonio Canova (1757 – 1822) a famous Italian sculptor who epitomized the refinement of the Neoclassical style.

The lions are finely chiseled with sharp crisp detail and are in a recumbent pose. They are solid and literally weigh a ton. They would be magnificent perched on pillars displayed in the front of a home on either side of a stair or entrance.

The lions are in good condition with some age related wear to the surface that give them a nice patina and some age lines to the marble. They are extremely heavy and a fork lift is recommended for movement.
