Large Urbino Style Tin Glazed Majolica Istoriato Plate

A beautiful large 19th century Italian hand painted Majolica plate or wall charger featuring the Renaissance painting known as Istoriato (history plates.) This style of painting first occurred with the Italian Renaissance humanists who took scenes from Horace and Plutarch and transferred them to the ceramic surface. This plate is typical of the style created by the workshops of Urbino or Pesaro in the 16th century. The colors were usually vivid and earthy, very often framed with borders featuring grotesques on a cobalt or mustard colored ground.

The plate is in excellent condition ready to be hung and admired as a piece of art or placed on a large plate stand.

Size 20” Diameter.
