19th C. British Oil On Canvas After Robert James Gordon

Presenting a large impressive 19th century oil on canvas depicting a musical concert after British artist Robert James Gordon (?-1894.) The painting depicts a wigged pianist playing for the singer who stands with her back to the audience, a fan dramatically waving in her outstretched hand while she sings her aria.

Robert James Gordon was a talented British artist who painted large compositions and print work during the Victorian era. A similar or companion painting titled "A Music Lesson" was listed at Sotheby's. That painting showed a similar pianoforte and mirror in the background; the subjects, however, are different.

The large painting is in very good condition and set into a gilded carved frame, the canvas stamped by notable 19th Century artists' supplier J.B. Smith. The painting is not visibly signed on the front but R. J. Gordon's name is on a back stretcher.
