Presented for sale is a rare English sterling silver Repoussé wedding cup, hallmarked for makers Berthold & Muller, dated l896. The base cup features Queen Elizabeth I holding the hinged cup over her head.
The tradition of the hinged wedding cup comes from a German fable. A young woman fell in love with a lowly goldsmith whom her father forbade her to marry. After much pleading, the father finally agreed to grant their wish if the goldsmith could produce a cup where a couple could drink at the same moment without spilling a drop. Much to the chagrin of the father the goldsmith produced such a cup and they were allowed to marry. To this day, the wedding cup remains a symbol of love and good luck.
The cup is in excellent age-related condition with slight warping of the hinge; troy ounce weight 7.7025.
Size: 8 ½" Height.
