This evening I am offering a most unique filigree brooch for your consideration. I am uncertain whether to call this "spun silver", gold washed silver, or simply filigree, but I can assure you that whatever the correct terminology, it is a lovely and delicate piece.
It measures approx. 2 and 3/4 inches in length and approx. 2 and 1/2 inches at the widest point. It is made of 833 silver and was made in Portugal. The brooch is in great condition given it's age and the area of interest is definitely on the back. The old pin stem measures a lengthy 2 inches and it's the lower end of the pin stem that bears the 2 hallmarks. The one hallmark is barely discernable but you can make out "833". The other hallmark (see photo), bears the maker's mark belonging to Antonio Pinto Bernardino of Gondomar, Portugal. Given the above information and the mark registration dates, I would date this piece to the early 20's. The only thing worth mentioning is that the pin assembly appears to have been replaced as evidenced by a pool of solder beneath the roll-over clasp (see photos). Certainly this only makes the piece more secure should you desire to wear it.
The front displays a gold washed (vermeil) flower and is dimensional with layered leaves and a central bud that has yet to unfold. I have lightly touched it up with a rouge cloth as it was very dark with patina.
Overall, it is in great vintage condition and ready to wear. I have left most of the age related patina intact, therefore whether to clean it up a bit or not is left to the new owner.
