Vintage 1980s Jean-Paul Gaultier Classique Jacket

Age: 1980s

Fabric label: 70s Polyamide Nylon – 30% Cotton

The half lining is 61% Nylon and 39% acetate.

The care label reads dry clean only – Percloretilene with like colors only – cool iron.

Description: This is a vintage 1980s Polyamide Nylon & Cotton Jacket which is styled like an army jacket.

It features a series of 6 pockets on the jacket and some of these are doubled pockets. 3 of the pockets do up with a zipper and the rest do up with Velcro tabs. It does up with 3 plastic buttons and it is a fitted styled jacket. The sleeves are fully lined.

The semi-lining is interesting as well as it features a head drawing (which I believe to be a drawing of Gaultier himself with his signature underneath and the Classique line named under that).

Color: Brick Red – Rust Coloring

********************************************************************* Here is some information about Jean-Paul Gaultier courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild

As a teenager, Jean Paul Gaultier (b. 1952) sent design sketches to Pierre Cardin, who then hired him as an assistant. He later worked with Esterel and at Jean Patou before founding Jean Paul Gaultier S.A. in 1978. He was not immediately successful, but his streetwear inspired collections hit a chord with 1980s fashionistas. He also began to experiment with underwear as outerwear, and he designed the famous lingerie-inspired stage costumes for Madonna.

In 1984, Gaultier began a menswear line – a line that sometimes put men into skirts. Junior Gaultier, a lower-priced line, was started in 1987 and Gaultier Jeans was launched in 1992. In 1997 he added a couture collection. From 2004 to 2010, Gaultier was also the designer at Hermès.

After having viewed his collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts recently, I have to say I respect his work all the more. The design, quality and craftsmanship were simply amazing!
