Label: Harris Tweed Handwoven Pure Scottish Wool. The official definition of Harris Tweed as set in British law is:
"Harris Tweed means a tweed which has been hand woven by the islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides, finished in the islands of Harris, Lewis, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra and their several purtenances (The Outer Hebrides) and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides." (courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild) Description: This is a vintage 50s men's coat made of Harris Tweed cloth. The coat has medium width lapels, a 12' kick pleat, a slash pocket at either side and does up with three buttons down the front. It is half lined - upper back, sleeves and sides, only the lower back is unlined
Color: Light brown and gray tones with colored flecks of yellow, red, green and blue
Material: Wool Tweed
Sizing: No size is indicated, so it should fit a man that fits a US size 44 - in any case, please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 20" across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 25" long
Sleeve Inseam: 15" long
Chest: 50", taken under the arms
Overall length: 43"
It is in very good condition with no wear, tear, stains or odors - the only defect is a pinhead sized hole in the weave at the upper back, almost looks like a spread in the weave. This is barely noticeable, but could easily be repaired by a tailor if it bothered anyone. Otherwise, this coat looks like it saw little use and was well stored over the years.
Harris Tweed coats are classic and will last a lifetime if well cared for - Harris Tweed is a very robust fabric.....super coat.....
