Label: Label missing, but would have read "Malcolm Starr by Rizkallah" I am showing a label from the same skirt that a friend of mine from the Vintage Fashion Guild owns, it is the last photo, it is her skirt with the original label.
Description: This is a fabulous long skirt designed by Youssef Rizkallah for Malcolm Starr. Malcolm Starr manufactured evening wear through the 1960s and 70s. Youssef Rizkallah joined Malcolm Starr in 1969 and stayed until 1975. He was Egyptian born and opened couture houses in Egypt until political unrest during the 60s forced him to leave for Lebanon and subsequently for the US. He became chief designer at Starr in 1972 and was responsible for designing an "ethnic" line called the "Caspian Sea Collection" that gained great popularity and then the Circus group, which featuring designs of animals and children in felt applique on cotton. (Information courtesy of a member of the Vintage Fashion Guild).
This skirt, of course, was part of the circus line designed by Rizkallah. It features circus cats framed within the bars of a cage - a lion, a leopard and a panther. The lion is built in four layers of felt, affixed with brass "eyes". The leopard is made of spotted velvet. There are black "flaps" at the hemline and the waist and hem are made of red and black felt with gold rick-rack. The result is really quite spectacular - unique and wonderful!
The skirt does up with a zipper at the back and two hooks at the back of the waistband. The skirt is fully lined in white rayon acetate.
Sizing: No size is indicated, but please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Waist: 24" around
Bottom circumference: 82" around
It is in very good condition with no wear or tear and is free of stains or odors. It is very crisp looking and obviously saw little use and was well stored over the years.
This is a hard-to-find skirt - really exceptional construction and design that is sure to be noticed and "oohed and awed" over!
