Vintage 1980s Jean Paul Gaultier Pour Gibo Dress

Description: This is a wonderful example of early Jean-Paul Gaultier design. GIBO is an Italian clothing manufacturer founded in 1962. GIBO was one of the first investors in Jean-Paul Gaultier, funding him in 1981. Although Gaultier started his own label in 1976, GIBO allowed him to start merchandising his designs in a serious way and retained a license for his designs through the 1980s.

This dress does up with a metal zipper down the front. It has an elasticized black collar and elasticized black accents on the pockets and sleeves and has a built-in wraparound around the bodice. The layers wrap with the aid of a belt, however, we were unable to really figure out how the belt actually works. There is a loop at the upper back that we think would accommodate the belt in some way, but we were unable to make it work. We thought, perhaps around the neck, as it wasn't long around to wrap twice around the waist and too long to wrap once around the waist. Most likely, the belt is meant to hang down the back. In any case, we've posed the dress the best that we could and I'm sure that with a bit of experimentation you could find the proper way to wear this.

The dress has large shoulder pads, typical of 80s fashion.

The fabric has a whimsical print on it, featuring dogs, martinis, pipes, crowns, abstract motifs , arrows and stick people.

Color: Claret red with blue, green, dull orange print

Material: Rayon or rayon blend

Sizing: The size label reads 40, but please rely on the following measurements for fit:

Shoulders: 19" across seam-to-seam

Sleeves: 19" in length from shoulder seam

Sleeves Inseam: 17"

Bust: 42" around meant to be cinched with the wraparound

Waist: 40" around unbelted

Overall length: 48"

Condition:

It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, stains or odors. This dress was well cared for and stored over the years.

Jean-Paul Gaultier's 80s designs are iconic - although best known for outfitting Madonna in corsets and cone bras during that time, his designs epitomize that time.

This is a nice example of 1980s fashion in very good condition.
