This is a glittery black sequined and beaded dress custom tailored in Hong Kong during the early 1960s. The dress is made in a form fitting below the knee cocktail length - please note that it was a little large for my mannequin, so was pinned back for the photos, but the silhouette it basically as shown (may be slightly different on your body). It is sleeveless with a rounded scoop neckline at the front and back. It has a kick pleat at the centre back. The dress does up the back with a metal zipper. It is fully lined in a black rayon fabric.
Label: Exclusively Hand Tailored by Asha’s Custom Tailors No. 23 Carnarvon Road Kowloon Hong Kong. Due to trade embargoes placed on the People’s Republic of China by the international community, Hong Kong began to develop its garment trade during the 1950s, and due to limitations placed on export to the UK in 1959, export markets were established in North America. This is why so many excellent quality garments dating to the early 60s are found locally.
Material: Sequins and beads on what I believe is a silk base fabric
Sizing: Size 14 is indicated, which I believe is a British sizing equivalent to a US 12, but I’m not sure, so please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 15 1/2” across the shoulder straps
Bust: 36” around. Please note that the dress was taken in at the armpit area on either side by about 1” (2” total). This is not apparent and I would leave it like this unless you need to fit a 38” bust.
Waist: 29” around
Hips: 38” around
Overall length: 40", measured flat
It is in very good, clean condition with no wear, tear, holes, stains or odors. This dress has been very well cared for and stored over the years.
