Description: This is a fabulous 60s era dress that features wonderful Marimekko graphic printed fabric, most likely designed by Maija Isola.
Marimekko was founded in 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia. Armi had artist friends submit designs for silkscreening and then had simple dresses made up to show how the designs could be used - this was an early recognition of the role that industrial design could have in marketing products. Jackie Kennedy bought eight Marimekko dresses for use during the 1960 Presidential campaign and the company found commercial success in foreign markets with their bold colors and simple graphic designs. Maija Isola was Marimekko's most influential designer during the 1960s, having introduced the Unikko (Poppy) pattern in 1964. I believe that this dress features one of Isola's designs due to its similarity to Unikko.
The dress is made in a simple sleeveless shift style with a quasi-tent flare. The dress can open up at each shoulder strap, which are held closed with two button closures. It also has a nylon zipper up the back and is unlined.
Color: Brown, white and yellow
Sizing: No size is indicated, but this should fit a small to medium size - please rely on the following measurements for fit, keeping the style of the garment in mind (please measure your body or a similar garment that you might own for comparison):
Shoulders: 12" across the top of the shoulders straps
Bust: 34" around, taken under the arm openings
Waist: 32" around
Hips: 37" around, but meant to fall loosely
Overall length: 36", measured flat from the top to the hemline
This dress is in very good condition with no wear, tear, soiling, stains or odors. It looks to have been very well cared for over the years.
This is a great example of 60s fashion.....more than a dress, really a piece of wearable art, and a collectible piece of fashion history.....
