Antique Edwardian Mens Coat // 1900s Melton Cloth Overcoat w Lamb Fur Collar Size M / L

Age: 1900-1910

Label: No label

Description: This is an Edwardian era winter overcoat made of a heavy weight melton cloth. The coat has a Persian lamb fur notched lapel collar. There are eight knit covered wood buttons arranged in a double breasted style, two under the collar. The collar can be worn down or up for extra warmth, in which case you would do up the highest button. There are two snaps under the back of the collar, to which I assume one could have attached a capelet or a hood. The coat closes with woven cloth loops on either side. There is a velvet lined flapped pocket at either side. The coat is fully lined with a wool backed quilted polished cotton fabric. The shoulders are padded. This coat was made for a cold climate.

Color: Black

Material: Melton cloth wool. Melton cloth is a very tightly constructed wool with a smooth face that originated in the British town of Melton Mowbray during the early 19th century. It was first used by British sailors due to its wind blocking and water resistant qualities.

Sizing: No size is indicated, but this will fit a medium to large size. Please note the following measurements for fit, taking the style of the coat and thickness of the fabric into account:

Shoulders: 17 1/2" from shoulder seam to shoulder seam

Sleeves: 25" long from shoulder seam

Sleeve Inseam: 17"

Chest: 44" around, taken under the arms

Waist: 46" around

Hips: 48" around

Length: 39"

Condition:

There is damage to the fur. There is a tear to the lamb fur at the back neck and another tear nearer the edge. There is also a piece of fur which is missing measuring about 2 inches in length by one inch across. There is also another wear spot to the lamb on the edge where the first button beneath the collar fastens. These areas could be repaired either by a fur professional. In addition, there is some fraying to the lining at the underarms, and the bottom button has detached and would have to be re-attached. Aside from this, the coat is in good condition with no staining or odors, quite amazing for a coat of this age.

This is a wonderful Edwardian period coat - these coats are not easy to find especially in a larger size.
