This is a very pretty black velvet party dress that dates to the early 1940s. It is a soft and thick draping velvet that feels like rayon, with hand stitched interior seams. The front is beautifully decorated with clusters of gunmetal blue metallic glass seed beads, plus some green, red, and multi-color glass beads, all in the shape of flowers and leaf sprays. The beading looks hand done.
The three quarter length sleeves have nice shirring details near the bottom openings. The shoulders also have shirring and cotton filled shoulder pads. The dress is meant to be loose fitting through the waist, and there are no snaps, buttons or other findings on it. It slips over your head. There is no maker's label but is guaranteed to be authentic 1940's vintage and is most likely home sewn.
It is in excellent clean condition, we can't find any flaws. The light spots on the velvet are just reflections from the camera flash.
About a size Large: the bust measures 38, the waist is 34, the hips are 46. The shoulders are 18, the sleeves are 15, bodice length is 16.5, total length is 40.
Please remember that your body measurements must be smaller than the dress, as there are no zippers, buttons or other closures and it's a pullover, you will need room to move in it and breathe.
