This amazing 1920's flapper dress was rescued from where it once languished in a box, with shattering silk chiffon around the top beaded parts, and it has been professionally restored, and stabilized to a beautiful, displayable state. It is, however, very fragile, and is best used as a display piece or study piece. It would be perfect in a museum or someone's private collection, but due to its delicacy and the recent repairs, it must be worn only with great care.
The dress is a stunning shade of steely peacock blue with large leaf fronds intricately embroidered in blue silk floss. Scattered throughout are clusters of iridescent blue-black glass seed beads sewn on, in florette-shaped clusters.
The body of the dress is soft silk charmeuse, while the inside panel that also forms the neckline and sleeve openings is matching blue silk chiffon. The dropped waist is accented by a wide attached self belt with a fabric rosette on the left hip and a lovely pleated panel on the right hip. The outer dress of charmeuse has a deep slit up the left side, covered by swinging panels of draping silk charmeuse. An intricately beaded vertical sash hangs from the fabric rosette at the waist, trailing all the way to the bottom hem. The dress closes with 3 snaps on the left shoulder.
The inside of the bodice has been backed with high quality blue silk chiffon in a dyed-to-match-the-original color, and the top layer which previously had tears was painstakingly hand sewn to the new supporting under-layer. Recently the dress tore again on the side when it was on display and unfortunately, improperly handled. We had it basted back together by our professional restorer, for a second time.
All the restoration work has been very skillfully done but is visible upon examination; there are areas where the original top layer of chiffon essentially no longer exists and the segments of that layer which remain are attached to the under-layer peeking through.
