Van Briggle Pottery Bud Vase #838, Turquoise/Blue, Ca. 1920

The story of the Van Briggle Pottery Company is legendary. The brilliant young Artus Van Briggle, a rising star at the prestigious Rookwood Pottery, leaves Cincinnati, with the hope that the climate of Colorado Springs would abate his failing health. With his young bride Anne Gregory by his side, and the financial support of Rookwood's founder Maria Longworth Storer, he forms the Van Briggle Pottery Company. Following Artus's death in 1904 at the age of 35, Anne Van Briggle becomes president of the company, and remained involved in its operation until her death in 1929. The Van Briggle Pottery & Tile Company remains one of the oldest American companies still producing art pottery today.

This superb arts and crafts bud vase, designed by Anne Van Briggle in 1910 and produced circa 1920, features a delicately embossed, stylized flower bud motif, covered in a turquoise matte glaze with generous blue overspray.

This lovely ovoid bud vase is in excellent condition, free from chipping, cracking, crazing or restoration, with a handful of minute production glaze bursts.

Marked at the base with Van Briggle's conjoint A logo, and "Van Briggle" incised in mixed upper and lower case letters.

H 5.5", W 2.25", rim .75", base 2".
