18th c. Royal Crest Ivory Tortoise Shell Snuff Box

This spectacular (French?) snuff box dates to the Napoleonic era, and is truly worthy of display in a museum. The carved ivory coat of arms, which includes an armor mask above a 9-pointed crown and a shield. This sits amid flowing acanthus leaves. The carving is nonpareil. You don't see better quality work than this. Around the sides and back of the box there is a border of flowers, and the bottom still retains most of the brown dye in the carved recesses. The box is lined with tortoise shell. It is very tricky to open, because one of the screws to the hinges has lost its head, and so the brass hinge plate inside moves forward when the lid is open. It has to be very very carefully opened and closed so as not to further detach the hinge plate. I'm sure a very handy person could replace the screw and make this good as new. The box measures almost 3" long X 1" high and 1 1/4" wide.
