Primitive Crock / Jar Albany Glaze w/ Coggle Wheel Decoration
A wonderfully primitive crock with a deep, reddish brown glaze offering a simple form and unusual decorations. Hand turned, the piece has a rolled lip with a light outward curve at the shoulder and then gently tapers down to the foot. What is particularly attractive is the coggle wheel decoration that covers the middle portion of the body. A "coggle wheel" is a small wheel that has been relief carved with a design and mounted to a handle, the potter is then able to "roll" an impressed pattern around the body of the vessel. A great piece that would work well as a vase, a wooden spoon holder, etc. Measures 6" tall. No marks pertaining to maker or origin. We believe this could date to 1910/20, but is probably earlier.
Condition: There is small chip to the upper rim which extends into a 3" hairline and a larger chip to the foot, please see photos of close ups.
