An original watercolor portrait of a character from a book by Charles Dickens - The Chimes. Part of Dickens' Christmas collection, this was the second book in the series, published a year after A Christmas Carol, with the full title being "The Chimes, A Goblin Story Of Some Bells That Rang An Old Year Out And A New Year In". This is a charming watercolor depicting Mr. Tugby, a rather corpulent character, and he is rendered in very nice detail and with obvious skill. The painting is signed with initials which are very difficult to make out. It is housed in a gilded wood frame with a tag on the back identifying "Saltzman's Art Gallery and Studio, 133 Volusia Ave., Phone 4466, Daytona Beach, Fla." which probably dates from the 1940s/50s, though I believe the painting is much earlier. It is in very good condition with minor wear to the gold. The shadows you see in my photos are reflections. Measures 6 7/8" x 5 7/8".
