Antique Nineteenth Century French Embroidered Silk Standing Picture Frame

This exquisite handmade frame originated in Paris and dates from 1880-1890. We picture it with a paper insert portrait for display reference. There is a second identical frame which we list and sell separately.

The base structure of the frame is wood, which has been covered with fine ivory silk. The silk has a beautiful handwork design which has been carefully done, both in silk thread and metal thread embroidery. Surrounding the oval picture inset (with glass) is a sumptuous netting of silver metal, outlined in gilded metal thread. Tiny gold sequins/spangles have been sewn in a wave-like vertical pattern. Small remnants of hand embroidery in rose, blue and salmon remain. Embroidered green leaves and stems still survive in the design. There is delicate metallic braid around the outer edge which has been secured with tiny brass tacks.

The back is covered in patterned moire silk. There is an easel stand with a metal hinge and a pocket for inserting the photo. The frame measures: 9" x 6 1/4" x 3 1/4" (front of frame to back of easel stand when standing).

The frame has survived in sound and sturdy condition. There is loss to the pink and blue embroidered designs but otherwise the design remains intact. The metal work remains complete, the metal braid intact.

It is a very fine and lovely example which would display a cherished ancestor (or adopted ancestor) in the most elegant of ways.
