This elegant little coupe (for holding rings and small jewelry) was once a souvenir of a wonderful trip to Honfleur, France. It dates from 1890-1900.
A fine seashell has been carefully hand carved to form an oval bowl with a scalloped edge. The shell reflects rainbow colors of pink, purple, blue, green and yellow when the light shimmers across it. The words,"Souvenir de Honfleur" are hand written in cobalt blue across the outside front of the shell.
The gilded metal mount is curvy with delicate details. It is heavy for it's small size. The arabesque scrolls in the design are so very typical of late 19th century French taste.
It measures: 3 1/2" tall, the shell bowl 4 x 2 1/4, the base 2 1/4" in diameter. It has been treasured throughout the years and survives in very good condition with no noticeable flaws.
It is a charming and beautiful little piece, reflecting the love of travel and of France.
