This is a rare treasure, belonging to the period of the rule of the French king, Charles X (1824 - 1830). Because his very short reign (six years), there are a small number of objects surviving from this era.
This little treasure/trinket box is absolutely exquisite. The frame of the box is completely bronze doré . Wide sheets of very fine mother of pearl form the flat planes of the top and sides of the box. The mother of pearl is of exceptional quality and has an iridescent sheen of pinks, blues and greens.
The top of the box has a wide "galerie" bronze doré frame (1/4") which angles upward. A smaller interior frame of flowers and scrolls meets this exterior one. A large oval medallion ribbed frame with flowers and fern leaves encircles the central motif. This motif depicts a lovely lady holding a basket of flowers. A small cherub hands the lady a bouquet and holds onto the sash that flows from her gown. To the left and right of this medallion two filigree designs connect the medallion to the inner frame.
Each corner of the box has gorgeous bronze doré Sphinx Gryphon. Each side is framed by a 1/4" wide bronze doré band with flowers and leaves. The front and back side panels have a central winged cherub, the front cherub plays a flute and the back cherub plays a type of trumpet. The two side panel also have central cherubs, the one on the left plays a flute and the one on the right plays a trumpet. The little box stands on four lion's paw feet. The bottom of the box is covered in a damask floral with pink flowers. There is one turquoise knob above the angel on the front panel.
The interior is lined with fine damask (matching the bottom piece) with pink flowers. The box measures: 2 3/4" tall, 4 3/8" wide (foot to foot), and 3 1/2" deep (foot to foot). The lid including the "galerie" measures: 4" x 5 3/8".
This piece is of museum quality. It is in excellent condition and an exceptional treasure from the very brief period of Charles X.
