Rare Antique Nineteenth Century English Lusterware Pitcher with Lid
It is a large luster pitcher, measuring 8 1/4" tall and 4 3/4" in diameter. It has been left largely in the white state, with the only color accents of royal blue, heavily accented by copper luster, being placed on the arabesque forms decorating the top half and just under the face on the spout. The base has a rim of luster over blue and the handle has luster and blue accents on the top.
The relief scene depicts two small children playing a card game. They have fire bellows beside them and sit on the floor with a little table between them. Their facial features are very carefully depicted, the child on the left smiles as if he just knows he is winning the game against a younger companion. An additional relief which depicts a bearded man who looks downward from just under the spout. The face is rare, very few pieces of luster were made with the addition of the face under the spout. There is a number placed in pink luster on the bottom of the pitcher, #34.
The lid fits tightly into the pitcher and is heavily accented with royal blue overlaid with copper luster. It has a little knob on the top. Very few pieces of copper luster were made with a custom lid.
The piece is in very good condition. There is some very minor chips to the copper luster on the bottom edging, one or two tiny chips to the glazing but otherwise there are no visible chips or cracks. It measures 8 1/4" tall, 4 3/4" in diameter, 7 3/4" spout to handle and the lid measures 4" x 4".
For collectors of lusterware this precious pitcher would be the highlight of a wonderful collection. For decorative use, it is an absolutely exquisite, and elegant piece which shows well in any setting
