Pair of Antique Nineteenth Century French Old Paris Bronze Bougeoirs/Candlesticks
Around 30 manufacturers produced Old Paris porcelain. Artisans had their own patrons from the French nobility. and they catered more quickly to changing styles and customs.
This lovely pair have bronze bases and tops. Each one stands on three curved feet which support a very detailed base. An urn-like bronze shape attaches to the Old Paris porcelain center, which is in a teardrop shape. The background color of the porcelain is a brilliant shade of French blue.
Two musical cherubs are represented in a center medallion, one plays the cymbals and the other the castanet. The angels are hand-painted and the details of their faces and chubby little feet are lovely. They stand on puffy clouds, looking to the earth below. A bronze candle holder, very ornately case is attached to the top portion of the Old Paris pieces.
The pieces are in solid condition. They do lean a little, which is typical of age and use. The porcelain pieces retain the original bright and fresh colors, with hardly any color loss to the hand-painted cherubs. The porcelain has chipped slightly at the bottom of each piece (where it attaches to the bronze base......see photos), but does not effect the soundness of the rest of the porcelain shape. This often happens at the joining point of porcelain and brass. Each candlestick measures: 6" tall, 2 1/2" diameter at bases. The porcelain pieces each measure: 2" tall, 1 3/4" wide at widest point.
They are dainty and wistful and would make a beautiful accent to a lady's boudoir or bureau.
