This playful caniche (poodle) jumps deftly in the air while holding a wire basket that is holding a sewing thimble. This cast metal figural sewing accessory dates from 1900-1910.
French ladies of nobility always had needlework in which to while away the leisure hours. Merchants catered to this pastime and produced creative and useful objects to complement hand sewing.
This cast metal caniche is adorable, standing on a little four-footed (the feet are in the form of flowers) platform. His little curls are visible, the long ears flowing and the puffy little tail upwards in happiness. He holds a "U" shaped metal rope in his mouth, with two round balls at either end. A central basket circle comes up from the metal base, and holds a sewing thimble. The lady would have kept this little piece at her sewing table, or in a fancy sewing basket.
The little poodle is in very good condition, as is the platform, thimble and basket details. The dimensions are: 2 1/2" tall, 3" long and 2" deep.
The little caniche is ready to go to a new home, to serve as a thimble holder for a lovely lady.
