Almanach Astronomique et Historique De La Ville De Lyon circa 1773

The binding ( measuring 7 3/4" x 5 1/8") holds the gilt embossed celebration arms of Marie Leczinska (1703-1768), wife of Louis XV and daughter of the King of Poland. Her gilt tooled coat of arms is interlinked with those of the king Louis XV and are placed centrally on the front and back coverboards. There is a wide ornate gilt tooled dentelle frame surrounding the coat of arms. The spine is embellished by raised bands which form gilt tooled compartments.Within these compartments is placed a gilt tooled acorn flower, surrounded by circles and flanked by two small acorns and filigree at each corner. The compartments are bordered with a gilt double filet. The page edges are gilt and the binding has marbled endpapers.

This text of this almanach (printed by the Imprimeur of the Archbishop and clergy, the Duc de Villeroy, and the government and town of Lyon) provides a window in the history of the town of Lyon in the year 1773.. It contains much information for the year 1773, beginning with details concerning each month such as Saint's Days, phases of the moon, time of the rising and setting of the sun each day, astrological sign of sun, and eclipses of 1773. It also contains documentation concerning the government and church officials of the town of Lyon (the names of the archbishop and clergy, lists of churches and hospitals, lists of military officials, names of members of the company of Chevaliers of Lyon, lists of colleges, libraries, doctors, and postal routes (including the days of delivery). Also included is a list of merchants and craftsmen such as drapers, haberdashers, grocers, apothecaries, carpenters, masons, etc. and where they are located. At the end of the volume is an alphabetical table of provinces and the parishes of the Dauphin, Bresse, Dombes and others dependent on the diocese of Lyon, as well as an alphabetical table of articles which pertain to Lyon.
