Austro-Hungarian Silver Gilt Paste Seed Pearl Necklace

This truly beautiful Austro–Hungarian midnight blue paste and natural seed pearl necklace dates to circa 1900.It is mounted on silver gilt and is marked with the dog's head signifying 800 silver quality The necklace measures 16 ¾ inches (43cms) long and the central drop is 2 6/16 inches (6.2cms). It weighs 12.3 grams.

This most lovely of necklaces is intricate like most Austro-Hungarian pieces. The drop consists of three elements. At the top is a roundel set with the darkest blue pastes and ornamented with flowers. Then comes the most lavishly embellished pendant, slightly domed and ornamented with a magnificent, raised bezel set paste. Around it are tiny seed pearls and then tiny blue pastes. Above is further decoration with flowers and pastes. The necklace is finished with a teardrop shaped pendant also with pastes.

One of the very pleasing features of this necklace is that the chain itself is decorated along its length. Also a particular feature of Austro-Hungarian pieces is the beautifully engraved back.

The necklace closes with a ring clasp. On a tiny adjacent ring is the dogs head and the letter P which I believe is for the town of Pest. This wonderful necklace is in excellent antique condition. It will arrive in a gift box.
