French 19C 950 Silver Egg Cup

I found this elegant, silver egg cup on my last visit to Bordeaux, France. It is made of 800 quality silver and dates to the late nineteenth century circa 1890- 1900.

The egg cup is 2 11/16" (7cms) tall and 1 10/16" (4.2cms) across the top. It weighs 15.5 grams.

It has a very elegant shape. The top has a raised, decorative edge of what looks like tiny fans. The interior is gold washed.

On the base is the Minerva's head Titre 1 French hallmark which denotes 950 silver purity. (this is higher than sterling which is 925). This hallmark is also present on the rim but is slightly worn. There is a maker's mark in a diamond shape which has a crescent and a star.

This beautiful piece has a few light surface marks which we have found difficult to shift. We wonder if the egg cup once had a coating to prevent tarnish. There are a couple of the tiniest dings but none of this is very noticeable . The lovely interior gold wash is all intact.

This lovely antique egg cup will arrive very carefully presented.
