Edwardian Italian Micro-Mosaic Edward V11 Coronation Pin

This is an extremely fascinating little pin It is undoubtedly Italian and yet has a picture of the coronation of King Edward V11 and his Queen Alexandra in 1902. Edward was the son of Queen Victoria who despaired of his dissolute ways and blamed him for the early death of her consort, Prince Albert. However when Edward eventually acceded to the throne in 1901 he became an excellent and much loved King.

This pretty micro-mosaic , pin dates to circa 1900- 1902. It was made in Italy where this type of item, composed of tesserae or tiles, was sold to tourists as a souvenir of the Grand Tour of Europe. This one is mounted on gilt brass. Maybe the maker's thought it would have more appeal with an image of British royalty!

It measures 15/16" (2.4cms) in diameter.

Around the edge are delicate half moons set with the tiniest red and white flowers and bordered by blue and white tesserae. For the British and these are very patriotic colours. Between them are gilt balls , a typical embellishment of the period. The image is set in beaded gilt brass and it has a celluloid cover.

At first I thought that the image within was a photograph as it is very skilfully done. I think it is some kind of engraving. I have not prised it out to find out. However this appears to be a very rare image. Google Edward V11's coronation images and you will not find it. Alexandra looks particularly beautiful and Edward is very regal.

The back is gilded and there is an old style c clasp.

This fabulous piece is in excellent antique condition with all the tiles in place. For anyone who collects British royal memorabilia this would be a lovely addition. It will arrive in a gift box.
