Austro-Hungarian Circa 1880-1900 Silver and Gemstone Trinket or Rosary Box
The oval box measures 2¼"(5.7cms) by 1 and 7/8" (4.5cms).The depth is 1 and 3/8" (3.8cms) and it weighs 28.6 grams.
The silver is embellished with flowers , leaves and scrolls in the repoussé style. The top is bezel set with a faceted citrine stone. This is in fine condition but does have a natural inclusion, only visible with a loupe. On either side are round, white stones which I took to be agates but one has pink fire like an opal. Both at top level and beneath the opening are lines of translucent , russet red carnelian agates. Turn the box over and you will find a fine black onyx oval set in its own, beautiful repoussé design.
The box opens easily on its hinge by means of a little silver tab. The interior is gloriously gold washed and I must admit I gasped when I saw it. At the base is the obverse side of the black onyx. The box closes with a snap.
I have only given the silver a light polish to retain its natural patina. I love it how it is but some may prefer a brighter finish. The stones look wonderful against the old silver. You won't easily find another like it. It is in great condition and will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
