Vintage Pewter Dutch Spoon with Classic Jan Steen Scene

This is a typical example of a Dutch pewter spoon. The bowl of the spoon depicts a surgeon (usually the butcher in those days) pulling a tooth in someone's kitchen. There are many spectators. On the bottom of the spoon you can read" De Tandmeester Jan Steen", which translates to " The Tooth Master Jan Steen" The spoon measures 8" long and the bowl is 2" wide. The bowl of the spoon is oval and the handle is also decorated with several faces and the top of the spoon has 2 crossed keys and the bust of a nobleman, probable the Regent at the time of Jan Steen. The tooth master is a very famous painting by Jan Steen, who specialized in depicting the every day lives of Dutch citizens, often with a humorous flair.
