This tartan ware box is unusual in that it is large enough to hold letters and photos. The box is covered in tartan paper and is lined with original calico type paper. There is a sticker of a couple of children on the underside of the lid. Judging by the liner paper the box dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. The liner paper has some water stains in the top, but is otherwise still intact. The bottom of the box is covered in the same paper. The top of the box has small wooden bars and there is a metal strip nailed to the front. The closure works well. The tartan itself is somewhat darkened with age and there is some damage to the edges as shown, as well as a strip on the back where the tartan has faded. This is a nice early addition to a tartan collection. Measurements are: 8" by 4 ¼" by 3".
