Lovely Set of Scherenschnitte/Papercutting Sailors in Oval Frames

This set of sailors depicts two young sailors facing each other. Imagine two young brother going of to sea. In the old days the only way to keep a memory is to get a painting or a drawing done. This type of folk art was another way to remember these boys. Scherenschnitte , which means "scissor cuts" in German, is the art of papercutting design. The art work often has symmetry within the design, and common forms include silhouettes, valentines, and love letters. The art tradition was founded in Switzerland and Germany in the 16th century, and was brought to Colonial America in the 18th century by immigrants who settled primarily in Pennsylvania. The pieces are mounted in oval frames. The condition is good, with the following defects: there is a small piece of the bottom rim of one of the frames missing, with a scratch; there is a bit of age related yellowing of the back ground, consistent with age. Measurements are: 9" by 7" by 1" deep.
