Genuine Cold Painted Vienna Bronze Dog Miniature, Pointer

This cold painted Vienna dog miniature is a good representation of a pointer. Bred in England to hunt birds, they are great working dogs. The sculpture is not marked. Vienna, Austria has long been well known for its bronzes. The most important foundry was the one of Franz Bergmann. He produced cold-painted and patinated bronze oriental, erotic and animal figures, the latter often humanized or whimsical objects d'art. He was however not the only foundry (there were about 50 workshops and many sculptors) and he actually did not do any of the sculptures. He just made the bronzes. 'Cold painted bronze' refers to pieces cast in Vienna and then decorated in several layers with so called dust paint; the know-how for the mix of this kind of paint has been lost. The color was not fired hence "cold painted". The painting was carried out mainly by women working at home, a typical cottage industry. The miniature has quite a bit of paint loss from age. there is a patch of rust brown paint over one eye. Measurements are: 3" long, 2" tall and 3/4" wide.
