Grand Tour Early 19 Century French Mercury Desk Thermometer

The elegant obelisk-styled thermometer is made of ebonized wood with silvered metal trim. A brass plate on the front has a Fahrenheit scale denoted as (F) and a Reaumur scale denoted as (R) above each temperature. The Reaumur Scale was named after Rene Antoine Ferchault de Reaumur(1683-1757). The Reaumur temperature scale was replaced in 1790 with The Centigrade Scale. The mercury ampoule is in fine shape and the thermometer is fully functional. There is some minor wear to the wood parts of the obelisk, consistent with age. A bronze eagle finial adorns the top of the thermometer. This piece is an unusual, functional and handsome addition to your desk.

Note: this item can only be shipped ground as it contains mercury.
