This cross came from Holland and is quite old. The sailors used to make these chip carved pieces to keep themselves occupied when not on watch. This piece is made of a fairly hard wood. It consists of a base of many layers of chipped squares and the cross itself slides in the back. The cross has a silver-colored Christ on it. The piece is in good condition for its age, except for a piece in the center where some of the wood is missing. This has left a lighter spot on the cross. There are a few nicks appropriate for its age.Still this is a very attractive piece with a ling history.
Measurements are: 17" tall and 7" wide for the cross, the base is 4 3/4" by 4 3/4" and has 4 small square feet.
