This lithograph is by well know and listed South American/American artist Julio Alpuy. It is signed and dated in pencil and the letters AP are also in pencil, denoting an artist proof. The piece was framed in 1975 and it still has the same sticker of that date. The piece is in good condition with no visible deterioration.
Around 1940, Alpuy joined the atelier of Joaquin Torres-Garcia in Torres-Garcia in Montevideo, where he began teaching in 1943-44. He participated in fulfilling the firm's mural commissions, and in 1949, he fulfilled several commissions on his own.
Traveling in Europe and the Middle East in 1951-1953, he filled several sketchbooks with his impressions. Alpuy returned to Montevideo to teach and fulfill several mural commissions but left again in 1957. He traveled to Chile, then lived in Bogota, Columbia, and Caracas. In 1961 he emigrated to the U.S. and established his residence in New York City.
Alpuy received a fellowship at the New School for Social Research from 1963 to 1965, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1983, a grant the New York Council for the Arts in 1986, and a grant from the Gottlieb Foundation in 1990. His works are in several museums in New York, Israel and South America.
