This lovely large oil painting depicts a typical Dutch village in winter. The scene holds a church, a small street and a procession going into the church. The light is low, either early morning or late afternoon on a day after the snow. It is an old canvas, consistent with the age of the painter. The painting really gives the viewer a look into every day Dutch life. There is a nice play of light, giving the viewer the feeling of an early morning in a hazy Dutch village.
This painting came from the estate of Gerry Van Der Heuvel-Donovan, Pat Nixon's Press Secretary, who was Dutch.
The painting has over its life received a new stretcher (you can see the holes of where it was attached before). The gesso frame is also a later edition and has been repainted. Adrianus Zuiderwijk lived from 1895 to 1967 in Lisse, Holland. He is a listed artist who is known for his town views.
Painting measures 25 3/4" x 33 1/2", gesso frame, which has been repaired 35" x 52". The condition of the painting is good, although it could use a cleaning. Domestic shipping to the lower 48 states only.
