Signed Original French Steiner Body with Working Pull-string Voice Box; 1890's
This is a beautiful chunky French Steiner body for a bisque head bebe approximately 18 inches tall. The body has an Steiner ink stamp on the left hip, although blurry, it appears to be the same mark as the 5th body shown on page 204 of The Dolls of Jules Nicolas Steiner book by Dorothy McGonagle which would place it in the early 1890's. It has a working voice mechanism which has the original pull strings and the glass beads at the end of them. The tape as placed on the body at the factory was removed to restring the arms. There is no damage and the inside shows the bellows voice box to be in fine condition. The body is missing its hands. They could be either bisque hands or composition hands. The arms have a bit of crazing and there are a couple of top paint layer chips missing from the arms. There is minimal wear at the joints. This is a very desirable style Steiner body as it is fully jointed and has a nice pudgy shape unlike some of the Steiner bodies. The body measures 14-1/2 inches tall; the neck opening is 2-3/4 inches across.
We will leave the torso in 2 parts for shipping. A layer of hospital tape or cotton tape will work fine to join the mid-section.
