Designer/Signed: Jose Maria Barrera/Avon/gold-tone/lavender, pink & purple moonstone accents/1992/Demi-Parure (Necklace and Matching Clip Earrings)/Excellent Condition
Avon jewelry authority and author Sandra Sturdivant, in her book "Identifying AVON JEWELRY", stated this Demi-Parure (necklace and matching clip earring set) as "very ornate gold filigree studded with lavender, pink, and purple moonstone accents."
She also discussed Jose Maria Barrera and his interactions with Avon. She stated he "designs couture jewelry for sophisticated women all over the world." I had to look up the word "couture" ~
couture: Definition from the web: couture ( ) n. The business of designing, making, and selling highly fashionable, usually custom-made clothing for women.
She further stated, "In 1989, he began contributing upscale jewelry designs with a Spanish influence for Avon. Each piece is innovative and imaginative, and they prove that costume jewelry can be as beautiful as the `real thing'."
He also has many of his designer pieces selling at Neiman-Marcus.
I have read several places on the internet that this Demi-Parure is difficult to find. It was difficult for me to find as well, and at the time I was looking for it, this was the only set I found.
The pendant is 2 ¼" square and the 3 strands measure 17 ½", 18 ½", and 19 ½". There are 4 large purple and lavender moonstones, 4 small purple and lavender moonstones, and 4 pink moonstones with a 5th pink moonstone directly in the center. Each of these 3 sets set within one another to create a square with some squares having there corners between another set. There are also gold-tone "droplets" ~ 3 in each corner of the largest square.
The clip earrings have a similar structure only cut in half and no large purple and lavender moonstones. They measure 2" wide by 1 3/8" high. They have 5 moonstones the same size as the small purple and lavender moonstones on the necklace. They also have 4 pink moonstones which are the same size as on the necklace.
I try to describe each piece as if the person was blind so please be patient with me as I practice this skill. :)
Each of the 3 strands has huge round gold-tone links ~ like we used to make out of construction paper in grade school. I have read where they were referred to as "wedding ring links."
A picture I saw of a person wearing this necklace was not wearing it straight down as is the usual case for necklaces, but had it on the side, half way between bottom center and the neck. It is gorgeous no matter which way you choose to wear it!
All 3 pieces have the hallmarked "BARRERA for AVON" stamped on the back
